Here are our pick of places to snap away at while visiting NSW’s second largest city:

NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY

Your first stop should be Newcastle Art Gallery on Laman Street.

But you don’t need to go inside to get a great shot. Look up and you’ll see a giant white egg on a `nest’ of steel. It’s the 11-metre-tall Black Totem II installation by Australian artist Brett Whiteley and is positioned in the gallery’s forecourt. It’s an impressive sight, made of cast steel, steel rods and fibreglass. @newcastle_art_gallery #brettwhiteley #giantegg

NEWCASTLE CITY HALL

You don’t have to walk far for your next photo. Turn around and head down the stairs to Civic Park, past Captain Cook Memorial Fountain. You can take a good selfie here, but then continue to the end of the park to Newcastle City Hall on King Street. It’s a beautiful sandstone and brick building that opened in 1929. It has a soaring clocktower and is heritage-listed. #townhall #mynewcastle

WICKHAM RAILWAY STATION

For a splash of colour, head to Wickham Station in Newcastle West. The stairs leading over the top of the railway tracks have been painted rainbow, making for a fun photo. They were apparently inspired by painted steps in Istanbul, Turkey, and make for a great backdrop. #rainbow #smile

HONEYSUCKLE WHARF

For water views with a difference, head to Honeysuckle Wharf. Here you’ll be able to take photos of the tugboats at Newcastle Port in Newcastle Harbour as you enjoy lunch at one of the cafes and watering holes. You can also stroll up to The Maritime Centre, where you can learn about Newcastle’s shipping history and take a snap or two of a model ship or nautical treasures salvaged from shipwrecks off the city’s coast. #ahoy #apirateslife #sunkentreasure

RESERVE WINE BAR

If you’re a night owl, be sure to call into Reserve Wine Bar on Hunter Street. It’s another gorgeous historic building in the centre of the city, which used to house an ANZ bank. But it’s not the exterior you’ve come here for. Inside, as you order a glass of shiraz at the bar, pay attention to the wall in front of you. It’s made of glass bottles that are illuminated by a backlit wall that slowly changes colour. #winesnob #grapeemporium

FORT SCRATCHLEY HISTORIC SITE

For a gorgeous shot of the horizon, especially when the container ships are lined up, make your way to Fort Scratchley Historic Site. Here you’ll also get a great shot of Nobbys Beach and Nobbys Lighthouse. You can also go on a tour of the site, which was once a coal mine, then a naval fort and now is a tourist attraction and museum. #fortscratchley #maritime

BAR BEACH

A trip to Newcastle wouldn’t be complete without getting your feet sandy, and the best place to do that is at Bar Beach. Before heading down to the water though, pull into the carpark at the northern end of the beach, off Memorial Drive. From here there are spectacular views right down the coast to Merewether Surfhouse. #sandyfeet #surfbum
