It was a twist that dropped a bombshell on America fans of the TV series How I Met Your Mother.
The finale episode on Tuesday night left US viewers surprised, angered and dismayed.
It’s also left Australian fans swamped with spoilers, reviews and analyses as they wait for the final episode of the nine-season series to screens on Channel Seven on a yet-to-be-confirmed date.
The US screening unleashed a wave of reaction across social media and on Wednesday the #HIMYMFinale hashtag was trending in Australia.
“Why did i read the how i met your mother spoilers omfg,” tweeted Libby.
Others were determined to stay in the dark until they could see the episode for themselves.
“I need to quit the Internet until I watch the How I Met Your Mother finale,” wrote Josh Johnson.
In the controversial episode Ted does finally meet the mother of his children, Tracy, on a rainy train platform after Aunt Robin and Barney’s wedding.
But that wasn’t what got fans fuming.
The real clincher came after Tracy died and Ted ended up with Robin, who gets divorced from Barney and with whom love had looked likely since the pilot.
The outcome of its most-watched episode ever in the US fed collective shock and anger on Twitter from some of its 12.9 million viewers.
“it should have been called “how I never loved your mom and just wanted to bone your aunt robin” [email protected] #HIMYMFinale #HIMYMFarewell,” tweeted Katrin W.
“I’m going for a long walk. I need to forget I EVER watched this show or ever liked Ted. I’m so full of rage. #HIMYMFinale,” said Awesomocity0.
Show creator Craig Thomas has since responded to the backlash.
“We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us,” Thomas tweeted.
“We did a finale about life’s twists and turns and that is not always what happens…but THANKS!”
Thomas added: “Seriously – no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU…you were with us. We love you,” Thomas added.
